The appointment of James Timpson, the CEO of the key cutting and shoe repair firm, is an exciting development. We are optimistic that his appointment signals a fresh, dynamic and stable approach to the role. There have been 14 prisons ministers in 14 years.
James Timspon is the 15th since the 2010 General election. We should hope for some desperately needed stability moving forward, which might be further expected given his status as a non-MP, which affords him slightly more ability to take greater risk in his policy development.
For some initial insight into Timpson, if you are unaware of his work in the sector, here is a profile in the Guardian, his interview on Channel 4 in February 2024 expressed some fresh views on sentencing. Understanding the way that the Timpson’s company operates is central to understanding why Timpson is a interesting appointment to the role, I recommend this fascinating insight from his father John Timspons on Desert Island Discs in 2016, explaining the approach which has moulded Timpson’s.
As a charity, we hope that his appointment is an opportunity for 3Pillars Project; doubling down on the enormous progress we’ve made over the past six months in particular. It is significant as we prepare to officially launch our 5 year strategy, emphasising growth in four key areas: Programme, Impact, Advocacy and Sustainability.
Prisons have released plans and measures to release some people from prisons early and to delay the start of certain court hearings to prevent overcrowding in jails. How can we do a better job at creating a system to help those who are finishing their sentences early?
Investing in staff, training and morale, leading to improved retention. Embedding the essence of Leadership Culture in the Criminal Justice system is a vital part of its success.
Collaborating with the third sector means greater opportunities for those in prison. Working towards a greater future for their release as early as possible is vital. Something 3Pillars Project hopes for the future of the Criminal Justice System.
